Mage review: reuse a character without losing track of cost

Consider Mage for a recurring fictional character in permitted artwork and short videos when you want a browser workflow without local setup. Its saved visual assets can reduce repeated setup; this review does not establish how reliably they preserve identity.

Do not choose Mage for pornographic creation: its current Terms prohibit it. Mature Mode changes what you see, not what you may create. For permitted work, “unlimited” covers eligible manual browser runs; Agent beta, Fast Mode, API and external assistant generations spend Gems.

What this recommendation is based on

We checked Mage’s official documentation, current terms and dated announcements on October 18, 2026. We did not use an authenticated account, connect an assistant or generate an image or video. The analysis concerns documented controls, access and billing; the suggested trial below is unperformed.

Save the face, the scene and the starting instructions separately

Mage’s appeal is the route from a saved character to a series of images and clips. Three similarly reusable features do different jobs. Choose the one that matches what you need to carry forward.

Identity referenceCharacters
Save a portrait as an @handle, then use it on a supported image or video model. Mage says it carries the face across generations. That is a vendor claim, not a quality result from this review. Characters guide.
Visual guidanceReferences
Save an outfit, pose, location or object and call it by name. Crop the upload around the thing you want to reuse and choose the matching reference type. References guide.
Saved starting contextProjects
In Mage Agent, group Characters and References with project instructions and default model, aspect ratio and resolution. A Project saves the setup; it does not establish identity quality or persistent memory of every prior result. Projects announcement. Agent beta’s generated outputs spend Gems, even with free Low-level chat. Agent billing.

A portrait alone is a weak record of a full body. Mage recommends a separate full-body Reference when proportions matter. Unlimited Character creation starts on Pro, and the selected generation model must support the feature. Support and limitations.

Characters and References share the model’s reference-image allowance. Adding more is not automatically better: Mage warns that references can blend together, and a contradictory prompt can produce a compromise. Start with one character, add one reference at a time and inspect the change. Shared limits and reference conflicts.

Choose between reference identity and pinned frames before video

A good still does not establish a good clip. On Berry, Lemon, Melon, MiniMax-H3 and Plum, Mage documents two separate modes: a generation can use Characters and References, or use the model’s supported first and/or last frame controls. It cannot combine both modes in that run. Berry and Berry 2 accept a first frame only. Cherry’s first-frame control is available in Advanced only. Frame controls and model support.

Choose reference mode when the reusable character is the priority. Choose frame mode when the opening or ending composition matters more. A pinned face at each end still does not guarantee the face stays consistent through the middle. This tradeoff is worth checking before paying for a longer clip.

Try one character, one outfit and one small movement

  1. Save a rights-cleared fictional adult portrait as @mara. Add a cropped outfit Reference named @redcoat.
  2. On a supporting image model, try @mara wearing @redcoat in a bright studio. Keep the model and settings fixed while checking face and outfit separately.
  3. For a clip, choose reference mode or a supported first-frame mode. Request a small movement, such as turning toward the camera, and record the displayed charge before running.
  4. Inspect the beginning, middle and end for identity drift, clothing changes and unwanted motion. Count discarded attempts when comparing Gem cost per usable clip.

One successful clip would support that setup and brief. It would not prove consistency across every model, pose or motion.

Choose the billing route before choosing the subscription

A model in the picker is not proof that your subscription covers that run. Mage’s plan matrix applies to the exact model and base settings. Higher resolution, longer duration or some add-ons can switch the run to Gems. Current plan and model matrix.

  1. Repeated manual browser drafts

    Eligible unlimited mode

Use the regular prompt bar or Advanced with a model and settings included in your plan, and unlimited mode selected. The job queues without spending Gems. Check inclusion before increasing resolution or adding controls.

  2. A higher setting or a shorter wait

    Gems / Fast Mode

Above-plan settings spend Gems. Fast Mode also spends Gems to move a job to the front of the queue. Mage describes the same output quality; paying for the queue is not evidence of better results. Mode distinction.

  3. Creation through Mage Agent, an external assistant or API

    Shared Gem balance

Mage Agent beta’s outputs spend Gems. Website unlimited benefits do not apply to the API, and every external MCP generation spends your account’s Gems too. Request a quote first, even if you already subscribe. Agent beta; API billing; MCP billing.

I would start with the model, then buy the lowest tier that covers the work I expect to repeat. The published monthly prices are $10 for Basic and $30 for Pro; Pro adds eligible unlimited video and Character creation. Pro Plus is $60 and Max is $200. These are published USD prices, not a checkout quote; applicable taxes are extra. Current membership prices; billing terms.

The October 9 Nano Banana 2.1 announcement is a useful example of why the settings matter: it advertises up to 4K capability and unlimited access on Pro Plus and Max. The current base-settings matrix limits that unlimited access to 1K on Pro Plus and 1K/2K on Max. Capability and subscription inclusion answer different questions.

Make Gem spending deliberate

A subscription is not required to buy Gems, so occasional above-tier work may not justify a more expensive recurring plan. Membership Gems expire 30 days after deposit; purchased Gems expire after 90 days. Do not stockpile them as if they were permanent credits. Gem uses and expiry.

Check Settings → Gems → Auto Top-Up before generating. It can buy more Gems when the balance runs low. The API billing guide explicitly says to leave it off if you want API spending bounded by the existing balance. Settings controls; Auto Top-Up and card charges.

If you use an assistant, ask for the total before it creates

Give the assistant a model, resolution, clip length and a total Gem budget. An instruction such as this makes the intended boundary clear:

Quote the total Gem cost for one clip with these settings. Wait for my approval before generating or retrying. Do not switch models or exceed that total.

This is a suggested instruction, not a guarantee that every integration enforces approval. Mage’s MCP guide says the assistant can quote first; generation itself spends Gems. You can revoke future access under MCP → Connected apps → Disconnect. MCP controls.

For an accepted API job, cancellation and Mage-policy blocks keep the Gem charge; generation failures and the model lab’s blocks are refunded. A request refused before it runs is not charged. API inputs and results use temporary 30-day media storage, so download outputs you want to keep. Refund and retention rules.

Private visibility does not change content permission

Mage says creations stay out of the public feed until you post them. Publishing a Character is a separate choice and does not publish its generations. But “private” here means hidden from other users: Mage can moderate content, and lab-hosted models can pass prompts to their provider. It does not establish local processing or confidentiality. What private by default covers.

The short content guide defers to the full Terms. Those currently served Terms prohibit generating pornographic content, including sexual nudity intended for arousal. Mature Mode only changes display filtering. A paid tier, private creation or a listing in this site’s directory does not supply permission.

For a commercial character project, also read the full Terms before relying on exclusive rights. They contain both public-domain waiver language and a plan-dependent ownership clause, plus a broad content license. The short usage-rights summaries do not resolve that tension. Ask Mage to clarify how those clauses apply to the intended work before committing valuable assets.

Try a permitted character series before committing to volume

Pick one fictional character, one supporting image model and one intended video mode. Check that the content is permitted and that the exact settings fit your budget. Then use the small trial above to judge whether the saved assets give you useful continuity.

Mage is worth considering when browser convenience and a reusable character setup are the benefit. Choose a subscription for repeated eligible runs; use a quoted Gem job for an occasional exception. If maintaining a local process is your priority, compare the ComfyUI workflow review before deciding.
